How stack emission monitoring works — and what a compliant report contains

If your facility burns fuel or runs an industrial process, the authorities will expect periodic measurement of what leaves your stack. Here is what a stack emission survey actually involves.

1. Planning the survey

Before anyone climbs the stack, the team confirms the sampling location meets the geometric rules (enough straight duct upstream and downstream), identifies the pollutants that apply to your permit, and selects reference methods for each one.

2. Measuring on site

A heated probe is inserted into the duct. Gas is drawn through conditioning and into analyzers for O2, CO, NOx, SO2 and other gases; particulate matter is captured isokinetically on a filter so the sample velocity matches the flue gas velocity. Flow, temperature, moisture and static pressure are logged in parallel.

3. Turning readings into results

Raw concentrations are corrected to a reference oxygen level and to standard temperature and pressure, then converted to mass emission rates. The report should let a regulator reproduce every number.

What a compliant report contains

  • Site and stack identification, and the permit limits being assessed
  • Methods used for each parameter, with equipment and calibration references
  • Sampling conditions: flow, temperature, moisture, O2
  • Results as measured and corrected, against the limit
  • Uncertainty statement and any deviations from the method
